Feta

Nutritional Value of Feta

“Feta” cheese (Greek: φέτα) comes from the Italian word feta, which means “slice.” Feta is a Greek cheese, and is the healthiest cheese, made from sheep or goat milk (often combined). Feta has a moderately high nutritional value, and is lower in fat and calories than most cheeses. Unlike cheddar cheese, this cheese is brined, or cured in salt water, to make. It is naturally very salty as a result.

Feta is much less allergenic and easier to digest than cheeses from cows, which is good for those sensitive to dairy products. Of course, unpasteurized feta and other soft cheeses have a higher risk of containing the Listeria bacteria than other cheeses, so keep this in mind when buying your cheese. Feta is also one of the world’s oldest cheeses; Homer writes about it in his epic, the “Odyssey.”
